Laser Marking Steel

Laser marking and laser engraving of steel – everything from a single source

When laser marking steel, the decorative, esthetic aspect is of lesser importance. Rather, it is the practical, technical traceability of components in the manufacturing process that is of great importance. Our know-how includes technical allocation for components, barcodes, QR codes, data matrix codes, and, of course, decorative writing and logos of all kinds.

During the marking process, a thin layer of the steel’s surface is removed. In doing so, the heated area changes its color to a contrasty, oxidizing brown or matte black.

Precise contours with burrless cutting edges that don't need to be reworked up to a maximum material thickness of 10 mm.

Since a Nd:YAG laser system’s wavelength is so short, it is especially suitable for all common steel and tool steel alloys. In combination with laser cutting, CO2 lasers allow clear part marking, too. Depending on the marking intensity, the identification is even after chromating, galvanizing and other procedures easily visible.

Possible applications – unlimited flexibility

A typical field of application for laser marking of steel and tool steel is labeling of components and assemblies during the cutting process of platinum sheets with CO2 laser systems. But laser engravings also frequently replace mechanical engraving procedures when deep engravings in plastic injection molds and vulcanization molds are required.

Laser marking of steel – important information at a glance

In principle, laser marking of steel is a very clean and precise way to process material. The marking is particularly abrasion-resistant and lasting.

This often serves traceability purposes in the event of product liability by using timestamps and manufacturer IDs. These markings are extremely important in fixture construction, toolmaking, and mechanical engineering to satisfy the high quality requirements of various standards.
